If you’re here, you’re probably not confident on how to teach rocks. Let me share my wisdom. For reference, I have a degree in Earth Science and have been a rock nerd for life. I thrive in situations where I can be creative, and I have been teaching middle school science for 17 years.

  1. Teach one rock type at a time. WHY do teachers mix them all up? HOW is that helpful? Teach each rock type explicitly and do it well.
  2. Learn about the individual rocks. Where do they form? Why are they that color? What do we use that rock for? This video is several years old, and the resources shown have been updated, but the way I teach rocks is the same. Watch it.

3. Classifications: Each rock type is classified differently. As you teach each type, teach WHY they are classified the way that they are.
